Motorcycle Repair: 1971 honda cl 100, honda cl100, clutch disks

Question
My son and I installed a "new motor" in his 71' CL100. about 1500 mile son it, the clutch dose not seem to be engaging. The motor runs in neutral, and when you squeeze the clutch hanle it seems to engage but once you put it in gear it jumps forward and dies. We do not have a repair manual and so we are "flying blind" on this thing. have had fun getting it together! and help would be great. Thank you in advance.

Answer
Bob,

I was going to say that I think that #5 didn't get indexed on #2 here:

If the pressure plate doesn't engage with the splines on the clutch, center, then the springs won't pull the clutch pack together to ensure engagement of the clutch assembly.

But reading deeper between the lines of your message, I think that the clutch is not disengaging, instead. I would need more info on the "new motor" like when was it built and with what inside? Did someone rebuild one or is this an actual "crate motor" from Honda?

When bike engine sit for long, long periods of time, the clutch disks tend to weld themselves together. They will not disengage/separate in this condition, so it is like there is no clutch at all, just a direct drive to the rear wheel.

The fix is to remove the clutch cover, take off the clutch springs and outer covers, peel the clutch pack apart, disc by disc, inspect and clean all the parts, then oil them up and reassemble once again. When reassembling, read the note at the top!
