Motorcycle Repair: 74 cb360, honda cb360, point gap

Question
I have a 74 honda cb360, that I can not get to idle correctly.  It is down around 700. WHen I adjust the idle set to 1200 and then crack the throddle it stays around 3000 till i back the idle screw back down.  It doesn't stay running long at 700, and won't coming off the throddle at a intersection. thanks jeff

Answer
Jeff, assuming that there are no substantial issues with the carburetors, themselves, the usual place where high idle problems reside is with the mechanical spark advancer.

Pull the point plate and check the springs/weights for proper advance/retard motions. If it is sticking/seized, mark the points cam in relationship to the advancer base (if you put the point cam on backwards it won't start at all!), then clean the parts and lubricate the advancer with some high-temp grease. Point grease on the points cam is good for the rubbing blocks and/or put a drop of oil on the felt piece, if it is still there.

Reinstall the points plate, verify that the maximum point gap is about .014" on both sides then move the point plate until the left set of points just OPENS at the LF mark and the right side opens at the F mark on the flywheel/rotor.

Should be good to go after that!
