Motorcycle Repair: Tachometer, crane hi, evolution engine

Question
Hello,

I am wanting to time my 1998 1340 Evolution engine. I would like to know where I can buy an affordable tachometer to set the rpm. Also I noticed it is hard to see the timing marks on the flywheel with the timing light while the engine is running. Do you have any tricks of the trade that makes it easier to see the timing marks? I have the clear timing hole plug. Do I need a special timing light or tachometer since I have a Crane Hi-4 dual fire ignition and the engine fires twice per complete cyle instead of once?

Answer
timing a harley has always been a real bear. The timing mark is very had to see. I use a computer in my shop to do my timing, but it would be expensive for you.
On thing you can do is clean the mark and paint a little floresent paint on it. That helps somewhat.
On the tach. You probably dont really need one. I usually do it by sound, but if you need one check at any auto parts store. It is going ot cost you around $25.00 to get one.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
