Motorcycle Repair: 1998 Harley Davidson Road King Classic, harley davidson road king, remanufactured motor

Question
Hello
I own a 1998 Harley Davidson Road King Classic.
The bike has 55k miles. I am not the original owner so I do not know how hard the bike was ridden before purchasing. The bike has always operated well during my ownership.
The bike is now burning oil ,so I face a decision. At the minimum a top end re-build given that nothing down below needs attention , or , sell the bike in the running condition that it is in now. My concern is that if something catastrophic happens to the motor this obviously changes my options so I am not riding it as much as I normally would.
Top end - to bore the cylinders and replace the pistons and rings , since I am involving this much work should I just consider a total build?

My decision is financial. I love the bike but I will love any bike I own. I understand that any money I invest in the bike now will not be recovered when I do sell.

Can you give me your opinion and cost estimates and any options you have on the rebuild(s) top end or a full rebuild , or  should I go with a Harley remanufactured motor ? or should I sell it and upgrade ?
Thanks
Steven

Answer
One thing you have to consider is if you sell it like it is you not going to get much for it, because the buyer will have to work on the motor. If you sell it and buy newer, it will probably cost you more than rebuilding the motor. If it were me, and with the milage, I would rebuild the motor. You dont want to do the top end and have somthing happen to the bottom end just down the road. Then your back to square one.
If youa re asking me what my cost is, for a total rebuild, it is around $1900.00. Of course, this is going to depend on wht parts are needed. This cost is alot less than the remanufactured motor. For options, you would have to give me a call so we can discuss what you are looking for int he rebuild. You can call me at 937-354-3992
Good luck and happy riding
