Motorcycle Repair: 250cc ideas, motorcycle safety course, honda rebel 250

Question
Hi Deron,

How are you?
I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I'm getting ready to buy my first motorcycle and I don't know where to start. I need a forgiving and basic motorcycle that's well built and will last. I like classic-looking motorcycles, the naked bikes that have upright sitting position (not forward like sportsbikes or leaning back like Harleys). I like classic looks with one large round headlight, not too much shine (chrome, nickel), as quiet as possible, on the cheap side, and 250cc. Dependability is more important than performance. So far I've been thinking about Honda CBX250 (Nighthawk) or Yamaha YBR250 or Suzuki TU250. Do you have something to say to a beginner like me. Should I pay attention to the number of cylinders, gears etc? Which model is most dependable?
Thanks for your time.

Andres

Answer
Andres,
The Honda Rebel 250 and 450 make good beginner bikes.  They are both very dependable.  If you are intending to use the bike for city commuting or weekend pleasure then a 250 is a great choice...they do not do well on the highway...they are a bit small  for running with traffic. The Rebel 450 will run with traffic, but it will strain a little at 70...Kawasaki makes a 454 LTD that is very good as well.

I am in upstate NY and they require that motorcycle safety course be taken before a license is issued...either way it is to your benefit to see if one is offered in your area and sign up.

Stay away from the Chinese and Korean bikes...they are junk, parts are difficult to find and resale is poor....

The Hondas and the Yamaha Exiter 250 are relatively inexpensive to purchase used and you can generally get most or all of your money back at resale time . Same with the 450 and 454...

Any of the bikes you listed are good bikes. The ones I have mentioned are older models and will be priced accordingly....If you buy new, expect to take a loss on your money at trade in time....Hope this helps
