Motorcycle Repair: starter trouble, interstate batteries, bolts

My starter has blown on my '04 XL1200r. Is this a job that I can do myself? Any advice on the kind of starter to get? The HD part seems very expensive. If I can do it any tips would be appreciated. I also need a new battery. Any favourites? I have been through 2 HD models in three years. Thanks

In order to remove the starter, you have to remove the primary cover to get to the starter bolts. You would have to disconnect the battery and the wire to the starter. Volt tech and All balls make good starters. i use interstate batteries.
I would suggest if you are going to do your own work you get a service manual. In it you will find the steps and pics on how to work on your bike
