Motorcycle Repair: top end job, valve job, question thanks

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I own a 97 Road King with 103,000 miles. Exactly what goes into a top end job. I ask this question because I took my bike in for a top end job recently and the mechanic showed me a crack around the exhaust. He had rebuilt heads available to replace the old ones. When I got the bill, I was charged for the top end job and the rebuilt heads. I was thinking I should not be charged for the top end job since I got the rebuilt heads. Am I correct, or is something else done that requires the charge for the top end service? Thanks, Paul.

ANSWER: Top end job consistes of removing the heads and cylinders. the cylinders are inspected to see if new pistons are required or just re-ringed. The heads have a valve job done and all new gaskets are installed.

QUESTION: Nothing was done to the pistons.

Answer
When the heads are removed the base gasket has to be replaced or it will leak, but like I stated before, a top end job consists of either replacing the pistons or re-ringing them. If neither was done, then you didnt get a complete top end job
