Motorcycle Repair: hydraulic or solids, hydraulic lifters, oil light

Question
Hello Mike hope your time of was a safe one.My 92 fxd custom had leaking rocker covers, after replacing i checked the push rod clearance as you have stated in previous answer, piston TDC at firing valves down etc.I found them tight so i adjusted them going on i had solid lifters.Once i started it,it back fired from exhaust and carby. So i re-checked them this time tight again,so i thought i may have hydraulic lifters,so i bleed them down again as you said. Now they sit .080-.100 thou higher.I turned the motor over by hand and all seemed well, then bye starter motor till oil light went out still alls well.i checked them again but they seem tight, still turn with my fingers.Mike im to worried to start it thinking if they bleed up i may bend the valves. The is suppose to have stage 1 or 2 cam, head work and carby kit, dont know what brands though.Q1,as silly as this sounds do solids bleed at all.i heard there are half solid half hydraulic lifters that bleed up tp solid at high RPMs.Q2,i did adjusting stone cold, should i have done them hot maybe.Q3,With hydraulics can you set them when hot.Q4,Are solids better than hydraulic.  Thanks for all you do Mike.   Mario in Australia.

Answer
If you have solid lifters they do not bleed. they are made solid. Always adjust cold, never hot. It is the same with hydraulics, always cold. What you get out of solids is the fact that at high RPMs they will not float like hydraulics. Over time though, solids have to be adjusted and they make a little more noise. If the hydraulic bleed up they will not bend a valve. There is enough pressure that they will not do that.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
