Motorcycle Repair: 1987 honda shadow vt 700, screw extractor, screw head

I just bought a used 87 shadow and the battery is now dead. Can you tell me the best way to get to it and also the screws on one of the side panels is striped out on the head of the screw. Any suggestions on getting the screw out? Thank you for any advice and your time on this matter.

If you can drill a small hole into the screw head, you can try a screw extractor tool or left handed drill bit to spin it back out. Soak it with a good quality penetrating oil, first.
