Question
QUESTION: on 5/9/ 2004 Dewayne asked you a long question about his 84 xlx rattling after fixing a broken wrist pin clip...I have the exact same problem after the exact same repair on my 85 xlx ....did you ,or he, ever get it resolved and if so how?

ANSWER: I cant remember back that far, must be old age!
Where does the rattle sound like its coming from? Does it do it all the time or at idle or higher RPMs?

QUESTION: Sounds good at idle....when revved you get click ,clack and bad rattle noise.. stethescope is loudest on front two pushrod tubes....about the same at lifter and at rocker...adjusted pushrods many times....inspected lifters cams, pushrods...no wear or damage....had cams out...needle bearings bushings and end play all were good...mechanics tell me to ride it till it breaks, but it's loud enough to make me think it could break somethi9ng at any time.

ANSWER: Since you said you adjusted the pushrods, do you have hydrolic or solid lifters?

QUESTION: Solid with roller on bottom, looks fine rolls fine, barely any side play...but today, I put the stethesscope on it right after a short ride around the block and everything sounded good except front exhaust pushrod, right on the tappet guide I get a loud clack, clack ,clack but a 1/4" below the tappet guide on the engine case it's quiet....and rocker is fairly quiet... I don't get it....1/4" making a huge difference in the loudness?

Answer
the more loose the pushrods are, in solids, the more they rattle. You are going to get some lifter noise, just because you have to have vlave lash for the solids. When setting them make sure you do it cold and once you have them set, the pushrod should just turn in your fingers.
Good luck and happy riding
