Motorcycle Repair: S&S carb set up, champion spark plugs, champion plugs

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mike ; I have a 1995 Dyna FXD with an S&S super carb and I'm getting a miss when I accelerate. I check the plugs and find dry black soot. When I change the plugs it idles smoothly, but when I drive again ie; next day the same thing happens . Perhaps the carb needs proper setting up?
I located the air/fuel mix screw and also see 2 smaller screws ,1 each to the left and right of the air/ fuel screw and have adjusted both with a positive result, but still not good . I set it up for a warm idle of 1000rpm.
Could you possibly instruct me in the proper set up procedures. Also I'm using Champion spark plugs should I be using another type . Thanks & Rgds; Ron in Canada

ANSWER: Has it always done this since installing the carb or is this somthing new?

QUESTION: Hi Mike; Thanks for the prompt reply. I bought the bike as is last fall 2008  with the S&S carb already installed and noticed  a couple of misses.I'm assuming the it's a stock S'S carb with regular size jets etc It just says S&S super with no additional letters IE;A B or E.I stored the bike over the winter in an unheated garage "pretty cold in my neck of the woods" and stabilized the gas in tank. When I started using it in spring this year the miss was more pronounced when cold especially using fuel enhancer to maintain cold rpm of 1000. After a 20-30 mile highway drive it levelled out and the plugs were a nice dry light brown with no more missing.I know I flooded it a couple of time when attempting to start but changed out plugs and started her up.It's probably irrelevant but FYI the engine was bored out to 91 cu in from stock 80 cubic and S&S bottom end installed.and assuming S&S carb was installed after engine mods.It also has a 2 in 1 header pipes as former owner used to race the bike . What about Champion plugs would yourecommend another brand? Thanks again Rgds; Ron from Canada

Answer
Your sooty plugs can be caused by two different problems. First, is you coil or plug wires are weak. What you need to do is a OHMs test on them. If they pass then I would check the jetting ont he carb. To jet the carb properly you can go to S&S web site. Go to the tech pages and there you will find how to set it up. Your intermediate jet might be to big
Good luck and happy riding
