Question
Hi there.  I have a 1980 honda cb750 custom.  I am having troubles keeping it running without keeping my hand on the throttle.  I just put on a new tank/petcock and gas line.  It starts right up no problem.  I can take it for a ride and as long as I don't stop or slow way down  it runs fine, but it backfires a lot.  I can hear it while riding.  Just pop pop pop.  When I come to a stop she dies.  I am lost on what to look for that could be causing the problem.  Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer
Bud, it sounds like the engine is running very lean.  That's the popping sound you are hearing.  I'd recommend you start by taking the carbs apart and cleaning them. Make sure the low speed jets are clear.  You won't be able to soak them and get them clean.
