Motorcycle Repair: High Idle on start up, honda cb 550, throttle cables

Question
I have a honda cb 550.  I just took it out for the first time this year. When i started it, it revved up to 5000 RPM.  When i grabbed the throttle and pushed up it back off a little but was still revving around 3000 RPM.  Did the cable tighten up on me?? What is best course of action??

Answer
Yuri, it could be the cable is hung up on something or the cable is rusted inside.  You should be able to tell if it's the throttle cables by how freely the carbs open and close with the throttles.  If you hear the throttle plate click close when you flip the throttle open and release the throttle, it's probably not the cables and the problem is in the carbs.  It's possible the carb throttle shafts are gummed up and stuck partially open.
