Motorcycle Repair: Weak Spark, yamaha xv750, spark plug wire

Question
QUESTION: Hi, i recently had a breakdown and was informed by the mechanic that it may be my ignition coils, as the rear cylinder fired and the front had weak spark, could this be a dead coil or something a little more serious, all other wiring seems to be ok?

ANSWER: Simon, I'm not understanding why you're asking me this question if you've already had the bike looked at by a mechanic. Aside from that, you forgot to include detailed info such as what year, make and model the bike is, so it's very hard for me to help you without that.

QUESTION: Apologies, it is a yamaha xv750 13 years old, i only ask because i have been reading information in the manual and it also states the ignition pack could be the problem, i am just not sure

Answer
Chances are if your mechanic is a competent one then his diagnosis should be spot on. Coils have been known to "decay" over years of use and not provide enough voltage for a strong spark, eventually just quitting altogether. Other components on older bikes could be at fault, too, like the spark plug itself, the spark plug wire or the electronic ignition box itself, but I would trust the mechanic's opinion myself. What you might want to do is ask around and see if other riders in your area are familiar with this mechanic and if they speak highly of his work. If not, you may want to try taking the bike to one with a more stellar reputation.
