AnswerChances are if your mechanic is a competent one then his diagnosis should be spot on. Coils have been known to "decay" over years of use and not provide enough voltage for a strong spark, eventually just quitting altogether. Other components on older bikes could be at fault, too, like the spark plug itself, the spark plug wire or the electronic ignition box itself, but I would trust the mechanic's opinion myself. What you might want to do is ask around and see if other riders in your area are familiar with this mechanic and if they speak highly of his work. If not, you may want to try taking the bike to one with a more stellar reputation.
