Motorcycle Repair: 1978 Honda Hawk 400 T ll, honda hawk, overflow tube

Question
I rebuilt the two carburetors on my Honda and replace it. When I replaced the
gas tank and turned on the gas, gas ran down off the carburetor in a small but
steady stream. Can you tell me what is wrong? Is the float hung up?

Answer
Paul, if the fuel is coming out of the overflow tube on the bottom of the float bowl, then yes the float valve is sticking open.

My suggestion is to first clean up any residual fuel spills, then go ahead and start the engine. Generally the vibration of the engine when running will dislodge the float/float valve and it will pop back into place and shut the fuel off again.

Also, you can try tapping on the edge of the float bowl with the plastic handle of a screwdriver or something that won't damage the carb material. Or just shake the whole bike back and forth a couple of times.

If those ideas don't work, perhaps you left an O-ring out or pinched one or the float level is too high for some reason. Float level is 15.5mm
