Motorcycle Repair: Timing, plug gaps, yamaha xs650

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1980 Yamaha xs650 Special 2. The right side pipe is much quieter  and has less pressure coming out than the left side. It also runs very cool temperature. This bike sat in a garage for 13 years. It was running fine and then this problem started. It is also a little sluggish. Is this a baffle problem?

ANSWER: Peter, did you do anything in the way of maintenance to the bike before riding it after it sat for 13 years? Did you thoroughly drain and clean the carbs and gas tank? Synchronise the carbs? Check the valve lash and spark plug gaps? Install a new air filter? Change the motor oil and filter?

I need to know exactly what you've done to the bike since you've owned it, then we can start troubleshooting the problem.

QUESTION: I can not get the bike to start. It backfires on the right bank. It has fuel spark and comp. I think I might have changed the timing when I installed the brushes. Can I static time it to get it started? the valves are adjusted.

Answer
Yes, you could try to static time it and see if that is the issue. I believe your bike has the old style points ignition system, so it is quite possible they need to be gapped and set.

I found an online forum for XS650 owners, if you're not a member already you may want to join up. Chances are you'll find someone with way more knowledge about these bikes than me:
