Motorcycle Repair: Oil Leak 1974 Ironhead xlch, breather tube, ironhead
1974 sportster xlch oi
Bare with me as I am a novice.

I just came upon a 1974 Sportster that hasn't ran in a year.

Looking from the back of the bike I have an oil leak from the left side engine cover when the bike is running. There appears to be two plugs which will dribble/spit a considerable amount of oil. One of the plugs which is closer to the front of the bike has a straight slot while the other has a cross. There is no oil leaking from the breather tube. Both plugs/caps appear to have been manhandled.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I have ordered a shop manual.

Answer
The front one with the cross is the fill point and the other is the plug to remove to adjust the clutch. You can remove them and on the back of each is a pince washer. replace it and tighten them down tightly and you should be good
Good luck and happy riding
