Motorcycle Repair: rear shock leaking oil type substance, kawasaki zl 1000, nitrogen gas

Question
Hi I own a 1987 Kawasaki zl 1000 eliminator. I just noticed today that there is an oil type substance leaking from the bottom of the shock. Do I have to replace the shocks?

Answer
Paul,
-if you are sure it is the shock leaking, I would
say likely it needs replacing.

-The oil leaking is the hydraulic fluid used
for suspension damping. Most shocks
have nitrogen gas pressure as well to prevent
oil foaming when hot which hinders the
performance of the shock.

-The shocks on the ZL1000 were not highly
rated when new. You could buy a new replacement
or possibly a used set from a salvage yard.

-Rebuiding shocks is done by some specialty
shops, you could check that out online.
The cost is usually prohibitive because
of the need for nitrogen charging
and other special tools required
for assembly.
