Motorcycle Repair: stuck in neutral, phillips screw driver, foot shift

Question
72 honda cb500. my buddy was riding my bike and got it stuck in neutral. the
foot shift will not move. the shift lever still works. i pulled the cover off and tried
to manual move it out of neutral with no luck. the bike runs fine still,  just won't
go out of neutral. need some ideas. thanks.

Answer
Matt, it could be in the shifter ratchet mechanism behind the clutch. Once you get the right cover off, you can see how it works and why it's not rotating the shifter drum.  You can use a phillips screw driver to rotate the shifter drum manually to see if the drum is stuck.  If it is, you'll need to pull the engine apart to fix it.
