Motorcycle Repair: 03 HD Fatboy clutch shaft throw out baring, thrust washer, throwout bearing

Question
QUESTION: Mike, Per your suggestion last week, I replaced the throw out baring yesterday because my clutch continued to need adjustment (too much slack). The baring had disintegrated. Today after riding 50 miles, I had to take slack out. What's the cause of the baring not holding up? Does it need to be packed with grease or is there something I'm missing with my installation?

ANSWER: When you replace the bearing, did you check the rod that the bearing rides on for damage? How much slack did you have to take out?

QUESTION: Mike, No, I didn't check the rod for damage but the bearing did slide on smoothly. Should I have oiled or grease packed the bearing before installation? I assumed the oil agitator would do the job.

ANSWER: You might need to check the rod ends. If they got burned or damaged they will keep wearing quickly and you will have to keep adjusting
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: Mike, What do you mean by rod ends? From right to left on the clutch push rod assembly is 1. retaining ring 2. thrust washer 3. throw out bearing 4. thrust washer 5. oil slinger 6. push rod 7. push rod end (Allen screw/jam nut).
Are you suggesting I remove the complete assembly and check the push rod (part 6 above)?
What could be causing the throw out bearings I've installed to disintegrate so quickly>

Answer
you need to check the rod ends. they are hardened. If the throwout bearing went out and the rod ends keep rubbing together then wear really fast. Once you replace the bearing they will keep wearing shorter. Also check the end of the allen screw for wear. Also, grease teh bearing when you install it. If your second bearing failed, it could be you got a bad bearing. I have never seen them fail right after installing, unless there is to much pressure on it when ajdusting the clutch and it is run like that
Good luck and happy riding
