how do i adjust the rear shocks?

This bike has dual shocks, there is a preload adjuster at the bottom of the shock that will allow for the first 1/4-1/2 of the travel have a higher spring rate, as far as I can remember there is no damping adjustment on these shocks, but some of these models did have a small knob that you could adjust to makke the damping higher or lower, depending on the load... this adjuster  would be at the top of the spring, and would be labeled... 1-2-3-4, etc.... 1 for lowest rebound damping and 4 for highest..... what do you want out of adjusting the shocks ?......
