Motorcycle Repair: 1987 Suzuki VS1400GLP-JS1VX5127H2102123-Neutral indicator switch, motorcycle chassis, base assembly

Question
Dear Mr. Kingsmill,
I need a "neutral indicator switch" for my 1987 Suzuki VS1400GLP motorcycle. Chassis # JS1VX5127H2102123. Motor# X501-102249. Big 4 Cycle in Evansville, IN. is giving me the run-around and I was hoping that you could help me find one and info on how to replace it. I have been through the manual and trouble-shooted it down to this switch. I have been on Big 4's site and they do not show the part and are no help on the telephone.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer
From what I can figure out, all VS1400s use the same neutral switch. It consists of a Neutral Switch Holder 25312-38B01 that engages with the gear shift cam (I think), a Switch Contact 09209-04021 that goes in a hole in the Neutral Switch Holder, a Spring 09440-02003 that goes in the hole under the Switch Contact and a Neutral Switch Base Assembly 37720-38B00 that has a small copper contact that the Switch Contact comes into contact with when the transmission is in neutral.

I would start by removing the Neutral Switch Base Assembly and making sure the Switch Contact and the Spring are there and in good condition. You might only need one of the parts instead of the whole thing.

As for the dealer, it sounds like they don't want your money so you should think about spending it somewhere else.

www.mrcycles.com should be able to supply what you need.

There is a Neutral Switch Base Assembly on eBay right now, too. You can find it by searchng for VS1400 neutral
