Motorcycle Repair: 1970 honda ct90, crank case, hand crank

Hello, I purchased 1970 CT for my son to start out with. In first gear, low and high, it has a clanging noise and in all other 6 gears it is completely fine. I 've done about everything on bikes but have never dug into the transmission could you give me an idea what I'm up against here. Thanks, Bill

Bill, I'm not sure what you mean by clanging noise.  But if you are going into the transmission, you'll be disassembling the whole engine. THe head and cylinder have to come off, the right hand crank case cover has to be pulled along with all of the hardware and screws under the cover.  you then have to split the cases to get to the transmission.  It's not too difficult but I'd recommend you have a manual close or take a lot of pictures so you remember how it goes back together.
