Motorcycle Repair: Gasket, kle 500, head gasket

Question
I think I have a blown gasket. I have a 1991 KLE 500.I have the engine turning over, but not running. I had the chirping for a while, and this morning I left home (20.c) and with 200m the back locked up. I wheeled in home and tried to restart, I can hear pistons moving, but no chance of running. Am I an the right track. Is it an engine rebuild
, or just bomb it? If I get new gaskets in, will it happen again?
Thanks guys
Craig

Answer
Check the oil, if there is coolant in it (very foamy and milky looking on the dipstick) the head gasket is blown. You can also check the spark plugs to see if they are oily, too. You don't need to rebuild the entire motor if the head gasket needs replacing, just the removal and replacing of the cylinder head is usually all it takes. If the replacement is done properly and the head is torqued to the proper specs, it should last indefinitely. No need to get rid of the bike, but call your dealer for a quote on what it will cost to fix it and make your decision from there.
