Motorcycle Repair: 1987 Suzuki VS1400 Intruder Backfiring, vs1400 intruder, aftermarket pipes

Question
Hi I have a 1987 Suzuki VS1400 Intuder and it is backfiring only after the bike has warmed up and i take it off of choke. It likes to do it when idling and when i pull the clutch in while the bike is moving also if i rev the bike up while in neutral. I have changed the spark plugs and checked the battery cables. I'm not sure if the bike has set for a period of time i just recently bought the bike. But what i was wondering is where i should go from here and if it will hurt the bike if i ride it in the condition it is in. Any help would be very appreciated. thank you

Answer
You can try draining the gas tank and carb and filling with fresh fuel - if the bike sat for a long time without any fuel stabiliser added then it won't run right until the system is flushed of the bad gas.

Does it have the stock exhaust or aftermarket low restriction pipes? If it has aftermarket pipes it may require a carb rejet to compensate for the reduced backpressure.
