Motorcycle Repair: 73 Sportster tranny locked up, ironheads, drive sprocket

Question
No, I can’t shift by hand. It feels like it will “click” into first gear and up into second. When it does, I get a little movement (1/8” maybe) of the drive sprocket. I can’t move the sprocket by hand in any condition. When the bike had the drive chain, I couldn’t move the bike at all. It sure seems locked up.  The bike was riding right, shifting fine before I dug in it… The three bolts are the only thing I can think of, unless the clutch is the problem, but I can get it to disengage and start the engine up… Dave

Answer
I'm thinking you posted this question to me by mistake, but it does sound like the transmission has locked up. There is a Sportster expert and another Harley expert here that you should ask this to, as they have more experience with Ironheads than I do.
