Motorcycle Repair: Lifter adjustment, cam circle, finger and thumb

Question
I have a 82 Super Glide , had a complete over haul , rods pistons, cam , lifters with hydraulics, carb ,  timing was set by the book as were the lifters. I have 700 miles on it now and it runs pretty good , the problem is after about a 50 mile ride the lifters rattle like a sewing machine , I am running 10 w 50 oil it it and am going to change the oil to straight 50 and reset the lifters , I have heard that they can be set when they are hot because that is when they rattle , by tighten the rod in it's lowest position  until you can just move it between your fingers  is this true , or do you have a better suggestion ?  Thanks  Jim

Answer
The lifter adjusting procedure your referring to is for solid lifters and since you said you've got hydraulics, heres what I'd do. I've always adjusted lifters when the motor was cold. Don't adjust them when the motor is warm because the heads are aluminum and they grow this would make your pushrods to long when the motor cooled thus hanging a valve open and eventually burning a valve. Whichever pushrod you decide to start with ensure that the lifter is all the way down on the base of the cam circle. Remove the pushrod tube and pushrod. Now pull the hydraulic insert and using a paper clip bleed the insert of all oil so you can easily pump it between your finger and thumb. Now try to clean all oil from the insert and the inside of the lifter base and then apply a few drops of red lock tight to the side of the insert and reinstall it in the lifter base. Put your pushrod in place and adjust it so that the end of the pushrod just touches the bottom of the lifter cup. Now adjust the pushrod out 4 complete turns and tighten the lock nut you should be able to move that pushrod up and down a little bit, less than a 1/4 inch. Do this to the remaining 3 lifters and when you start the bike up it will rattle for a few minutes until your lifters pump up. If you can't get rid of the rattle after doing this procedure you probably have a bad lifter insert and need to find out which one it is and replace it. Going to the 50 w oil in a shovel is a good idea.
