Motorcycle Repair: 1983 Honda 750 Shadow, honda 750 shadow, starter clutch

Question
In 1983, Honda did a recall on this bike to stop engine kick back when trying to start the engine. 26 years later the engine seems to have the same problem. It seems the engine kisks back at the top of compression or ever few turn overs. Any suggestions to redemy the problem?

Answer
Alan, I don't see any recall info on VT750s on this list...

What you describe sounds like the starter clutch springs are tired and the starter clutch hub is slipping when it runs up against TDC compression strokes.

The online microfiche skipped over the 1983 VT750 part that I think is to blame, so I can only give you this as a reference, but the design part should be similar

It is used on 600-750-1100 V-twin models.
