Motorcycle Repair: kickstart to electric start, clutch basket, xlch

Question
i've had shovels mainly , but now i've rebuilt a old 71 sportster, which is a kickstart . i'm 60 and i've kicked over my share , but no more. i've got kicker clutch basket with starter ring gear on it , ive got solenoid housing with jackshaft and starter gear. i've got starter and housing complete . i've put enough of those together. what i'm being told is the spacer on the clutch shaft is what is going to cause me trouble , could you help me out. i've never done this before so i thought i would ask a expert. thank you , randy

Answer
They make a spacer for the clutch basket that will work for kick and electric start. I did what your about to do on a 1971 XLCH and all worked well except I never could get the clutch to adjust properly. Sometimes it would pull at a corner in gear and other times it was fine. But it is a very possible job. I noticed on your rating you stated you would have liked more info, how can I help you. Is a list of needed parts for that job you'd like or how to remove the unneeded old parts and install the new that your after?
