Motorcycle Repair: CB nighthawk 650 SC, nighthawk 650, regulator rectifier

Question
hi,the bike is not charging the battery, and the when i jump start it,i have to put the choke on,and it stays at 55000 rpm,if i lower it it dies.i opened the right side where it says honda(think thats the alternetor)and it looks new.the magnets and all.how do i know whats wrong???

Answer
Simey, your two problems are unrelated.  The charging system has a stator and a voltage regulator/rectifier.  You can check the stator with a VOM but the reg/rectifier can't be checked with normal equipment at home. If you check the resistance between the three yellow wires coming out of the alternator, they should have equal resistance between each of them and no continuity to ground.  If that checks out, it's probably the rectifier/regulator.

The revving is caused by dirty carbs.  There a fast idle cam on the choke that raises the idle speed.  The fact that the engine dies when you turn the choke off, indicates the low speed jets are plugged.
