Motorcycle Repair: oil cooler, oil coolers, model bike

Question
Hi Mike.  I own a 91 FLHS and live in East Texas.  During the summer I will be riding in 95 to 100 degrees temps.  I was wanting to install a oil cooler, but most everything I see is for later models.  Can't I get one of those adapters that screw on at the oil filter(between the filter and filter mounting base) with the fittings to run to an oil cooler, and then route lines to the front to a cooler?  The lines would have to be longer than on a later model bike.  What about a thermostat?  I would appreciate your feedback.........Bill

Answer
They still make oil coolers for your year bike. Check with anybody that sells Sifton or Jagg. they both make coolers for your bike.
You should always run a thermostat when running with a cooler. The oil needs to get hot to one, do its job and two needs to be hot to drive moisture out of the oil. In cold weather, with a cooler and no thermostate, it wont get hot enough to drive out the moisture
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
