Motorcycle Repair: early 1984 ironhead, vent hose, loose chain

Question
i have an oil leak on the right side of my bike,it seems to cover the back rim over a short run and comes from the chain guard. could this be a crank seal or something more serious? the bike has 17,000 miles on it and doesn't look like its been misused or abused. i had the oil tank repaired on it and the shop that fixed that seemed to be more interested in rice burners than Harley's so if you can shed some light on this problem I'd really appreciate it. thank-you for your time

Answer
In that area you have a cam chest vent hose and a oil pump suction and return oil line. Also there is the mainshaft seal and the gasket for your cam chest. Any of the hoses could have been rubbed through by your chain or your mainshaft seal could be leaking or your cam chest gasket is leaking and finally your oil tank could also have been rubbed through by chain slap from a loose chain. Best thing to do would be to remove the sprocket cover and see whats leaking and go from there.
