Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki fuel flow problem, kawasaki zrx1200r, triumph thunderbird

Question
Hello,

I have a kawasaki zrx1200r (2007). Lately I have to ride with the fuel tap on reserve since I get fuel starvation problems with the tap in the 'on' position. It has been hot lately and I have had problems with dirty fuel before, if that helps... any idea what is wrong?

Thanks,
Myro

Answer
I have no experience with the ZRX, but what you've described sounds like a similar problem I had with my '95 Triumph Thunderbird. When the weather was very hot, the fuel inside the gas tank would heat up and cause the top part of the plastic mesh filter inside the tank on the fuel tap assembly to swell up. It would not let any fuel flow into the fuel tap unless it was switched to "reserve", which let fuel flow through the bottom part of the mesh filter which was not swollen. It's a long shot, but might be worth checking into.
