Motorcycle Repair: 1979 CB750K Ltd Overheat & Charging, air fuel mixture, regulator rectifier

Question
I am restoring a CB Ltd and just had the carbs reworked. now the bike is running very hot and stops charging the battery. new brushes, charges at first startup 13.5 volts but about 5 minutes later it just drops away. any suggestions? thanks David

Answer
David, the fact that it's running hot indicates the carbs are providing a lean air fuel mixture.  It's possible the float levels are set too low.  You can verify this theory by applying a little choke and see if it doesn't run a little better.  I can't connect the running hot with not charging. It's possible the regulator rectifier is getting hot and stops working or either the stator or field coils could be heating up and opening up a circuit.
