Motorcycle Repair: jackshaft install, shallow side, pinion gear

Question
I'm building a bike from ground up and all components are new.
After installing the engine, transmission and drive line when I turn over the engine the jackshaft indexes to the ring gear but doesn't fully engage the ring gear and grinds. the pinion gear retracts. In the manual the picture shows  large jackshaft coupling with the inside snap ring facing away from transmission (shallow side). The dealer said the shallow side to face towards the transmission so that's how I installed it. Being installed towards Trans seems wrong. the large bushing also moves outward with the jackshaft. is the book wrong or is the dealers advice wrong??. can you send me a picture of the large coupling that explains this.
Thanks,
mark

Answer
I dont have anyway to send pics on here.
The shallow side of the large coupling goes towards the trans. Check your clutch housing to make sure its all the way back and the nut it tight. Also, if it chattering, you might not ahve a fully charged battery.
Good luck and happy riding
