Motorcycle Repair: fuel, intake leak, petcock

Question
QUESTION: i have a 96 sporty that has a different tank, i am having problems with my bike shutting off when running at high rpm. My fuel filter doesn't seem to be filling up at all. I checked the petcock and it was clean. I have a vented gas cap, and the float in the bowl is fine. The bike will run fine for about 1/4 of a mile and then it will back fire, jerk, and then if i try to get on the gas all you hear is air being sucked into the carb, then it just shuts off. I have to wait for about 5 to 10 minutes before it will start again.

ANSWER: Remove the fuel filter and install a new line and go for a ride and see if that is the problem

QUESTION: thanks for responding. I took the fuel filter off and installed a new line without the filter. It ran fine for about 7 miles and then started jerking, backfiring, and shut off again. This time when i start it back up and hit the throttle it won't even rev up, it just sucks in air and back fires out of the carb.

Answer
You could have a couple of different problems. First, check to see if you have a intake leak. Let the bike warm up and spray a little carb cleaner around the intake. If the bike revs up, then you have a leak. The other thing it could be is the float is sticking. Lastly, the pickup for the ignition might be bad and shorting out. When it gets hot it shorts.
