Motorcycle Repair: Carburetor Adjustment, gas milage, cv carb

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2001 FXDXT with a stock Keirin CV carb.  I am a raw rookie at wrenching, but have actually taken apart the carburetor, rejetted it (back to original specs for mileage reasons), put in a new jet needle (from a 1988 Sporty), and gotten it fine-tunded pretty well, all in the past week.  However, I somehow adjusted the idle too high (actual idle; not the idle air screw located on the underside of the carburetor, which I can adjust fine), and need to get it down to the 900-1100 RPM range.  How do I adjust the idle?  Can I do so while the motor is running?

ANSWER: Look where the throttle cable goes into the carb. Right above it you will see a screw. Turn it outward to idle the bike down. Yes, you have to do it while the motor is running and the motor is hot

QUESTION: Handled, and it idles great; about the carburetor set-up, though...

I have the Screamin' Eagle slip-ons and high-flow air cleaner on the bike.  I also have a 1988 Sporty jet needle, a 42 pilot jet and a 170 main jet on the bike (close to stock).  The 50 pilot and 190 main jet that I removed were great for performance, but hard on the gas consumption.

If I put the 190 main jet back on, and slipped a washer under the jet needle, could I get the best of both worlds (i.e. solid low-to-mid-range power and performance without excessive gas consumption, but better pick-up when I twist the throttle on full), or is this combination not going to work for some reason?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
You can do that, but you have to give up one for the other. If you want more performance you have to give up some gas milage. If you want good gas milage, you have to give up some performance. I would try a 180 main.that will help with both
