Motorcycle Repair: timing, cam timing, cam gear

Question
trying to set the timing on a 1980 185 ATC. I have seen to set this you line up the T mark with the v in the housing of the pull starter. Then put the dot on the cam gear on the v on the top of the pulse Generator. housing on top. every time I do this my bike does not start. Is this wrong or is there something that I'm not doing. Bike gets spark and gas just does not fire.

Answer
Troy, that sounds right to me.  Do you have good compression when you set the cam timing there?   If you do, it's probably not the cam timing that's keeping it from running.  If you don't have a compression gage, you can check compession with an index finger.  Take the spark plug put and put your finger over the hole and put some force on you finger to resist the compression.  Then open the throttle wide open and give the starter a good yank.  If the compression blows your finger off the hole, it's probably got good compression.  You won't be able to hole your finger in the hole if the compression is where it needs to be.
