Motorcycle Repair: 1987 kawasaki zx 600, kawasaki motorcycle, ninja 600r

Question
hi, my bike will only run for about 5 seconds when i spray staring fluid straight into the carbs, and i do have fuel supplied to the carbs during this, but it will not crank unless i use starting fluid and when it is running it revs way high and then cuts off, any input is appreciated.

Answer
Tyler... more history would be helpful...   Bike been sitting? Happen suddenly?

What you describe is probably a rack of carburetors that have old gasoline in them or it all evaporated out, leaving plugged up idle jets and worse.

The entire fuel system needs cleaning and inspection.

If you have some good tools and can figure out a way to get the float bowls off with carbs in place, then you can check to see how much gunk is inside. If not, then you have to remove the whole carb rack and take it all apart, clean and reinstall again.

The other possibility is that the fuel petcock diaphragm has failed and there is no/little fuel being delivered to the carbs from the petcock. There is also a fuel screen inside the fuel tank, mounted on the petcock assembly. See illustrations for details. Make sure all the vacuum lines from the carbs are okay and connected properly.
