Motorcycle Repair: Speedometer/ Police Special, electronic speedo, speedometer

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a '93 Police Special Road King and was wondering how to fix the speedometer?  I haven't yet detirmined if it's just the cable , or what.  Is there a gear in the tranny that runs it, that might be bad?  Thanks   Greg

ANSWER: Do you have a electronic speedo or standard speedo?

QUESTION: Standard, the only difference is that it is speedrated for the police, whatever that means, I suppose it's just verified accurate.  I'm hoping it's just the cable and easy to fix, but I just don't know how it works, and how much into it I'll have to get..    Thanks    Greg

Answer
Your speedo runs off the front wheel and has a speedo drive unit. Disconnect the cable from the speedo and, with the bike jacked up so the front wheel is off the ground, Spin the wheel and see if the cable turns. If it doesnt, then remov ethe cable from the drive unit and check both ends for damage. If the cable is ok, then the drive unit is probably bad. If it does turn, then the speedo is bad and needs replaced
Good luck and happy riding
