Motorcycle Repair: 83 fxwg, clutch adjustment, clutch lever

Question
QUESTION: my 83 shovel has a clutch adjustment problem. iv replaced the discs and the bearings in the hub seem fine. ok...it slips in gear when you gas it and drives away at the light with the clutch pulled in. so it seems there is no adjustment. its already too tight and too loose at the same time. every one tells me its the nature of the beast, i don't believe it. im a fabricator so i built a custom clutch lever so it pulled the cable a little further (about 3/8 but it didn't help much) what do you think? thanks, rob

ANSWER: how did you adjust the pressure plate?

QUESTION: i tighten the adjusting nuts evenly untill there is a gap of 1 and 1/32 between the disc and the pressure plate

Answer
Check your throw out bearing to make sure its ok. Also, check the plates to make sure they are not sticking on the rods they slide on. readjust the clutch. make sure you put some slack in the cable before adjusting the clutch itself, then adjust the cable. If you are still having a problem let me know
Good luck and happy riding
