Motorcycle Repair: Sportster Forks, fork tubes, triple trees

Question
I have a 1987 Sporty 1100 which was in an accident. The fork tubes are bent. These are the small 35mm tubes they used for a couple years in this range. I would prefer to just find a "take-off" front end (from someone upgrading to wide front end for example) and upgrade the whole thing to something a couple years newer with the larger 39mm tubes. Many more fork tuning options are available for the 39mm also obviously. Is this possible, and what do I need to watch out for? What year ranges would fit the older 86-87 range Sporty? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Pretty much any forks from 82-99 will fit your sportster as long as you change the triple trees. There are many companies that make kits to change to bigger forks. Look at the V-Twin Manufacturing catalog on-line. They have a kit for your bike
Good luck and happy riding
