Motorcycle Repair: 05 Dyna, exhaust ports, thunderheaders

Question
I had previously changed the muffs to Screaming eagle slash, Air filter change and a map change recommended by the dealership. I have sense changed the pipes out to Thunderheaders 2 into 1. I noticed that the valve guides visible through the exhaust ports look as though I have been running Lean. From what I have gleaned from reading through your Q & A I should expect it to run even leaner now. Do you have any recommendation other than going to Harley and having it remapped? I'm quite capable when it comes to wrenching however I am not familiar with the Fuel injection stuff. Other symptoms are backfiring between gears 1&2 mostly and a lot of blabbering on decelerate down hill. This is a bit noisy for the neighborhood and my thought is that if tuned up right some of this noise will go away.

Answer
Your best indicator of a lean condition is checking the spark plugs. Pull them and they should be a little tan in color. If they are white then you are runing lean. If you run lean, then you run hotter and you dont get the full power out of the bike. To lean and you can burn a valve. If you need to richen the bike up, the only thing you can do is take the bike in and have it re-mapped
