Motorcycle Repair: extra fuel tank for trike, main tank, reserve tank

Question
QUESTION: My converted H_D Road Glide to trike has resulted in using much more fuel than my wifes '97 FLHTCUI resulting in more fuel stops than her.

Can an extra fuel tank be added to the trike add-on which I can use first and then use the RG fuel tank thereby allowing me to monitor the fuel left in the main tank?

ANSWER: It is going to be alot of work to add a tank. First, you would have to deside where you are going to put it. Next, if you are going to run just the added tank, it would have to have a fuel pump and high pressure hoses going to the injectors and would have to split so you can run the main tank. You would also have to have a switch shutting off the added tank and turning on the main tank fuel pump as well as a shut off for the high pressure lines. I think its going to be more work than you really want to do

QUESTION: Lot of work, agreed, but so is getting my wheelchair out, putting it together, getting off the trike to fill the tank, getting back on the trike, take the wheelchair apart and put it back on the trike.  Placing the tank is no problem as I anticipated this when I built the frame work for the add-on.

Question:  what about putting a pump in the tank to pump the fuel into the main tank as the fuel in this tank is being used?  Would a simple float system attached to the main tank allow it to signal the extra tank to add fuel to the main tank?

Then the fuel gage on the main tank would indicate when all the gas had been used, or indicate when the main tank was near empty.

Answer
You can add a float to the main tank to pump the fuel and shut the pump off when it full, but the problem will arise as to where inside the tank to put the float and attach it to the tank. A simpler solution which you might consider is to put a pump in the reserve tank and have a on/off switch where you can get to it when riding. As your main tank gets low you can hit the switch and pump the extra fuel to the main tank. All you would have to do is keep an eye on the fuel gage and shut the pump off when you get close to full. That way you dont have to mess with a float system and a auto shutoff for the pump.
Good luck and happy riding
