Motorcycle Repair: Harley Wont Start, volt meter, angle sensor

Question
Hello Mike!

You helped me out recently with some problems and now I have another one.  My 1998 883 XLH Sportster (converted to 1200) does not always start.  The banking angle sensor has been changed along with new plugs and wires.  Bike runs good most of the time but off and on the engine will turn over when hitting the start button but will not fire.  Just happened again to me today at lunch and could not get it to go at all.  Was told by someone with the same problem on the same year bike that he had to replace the stator and rotor.  What do you think?

Thank you!

Brian

Answer
First thing you need to do is determine if you have power going to the starter. there is a small 12 volt wire going to the stater from the starter relay. Unplug it and with a volt meter check the wire when you hit the starter button. Do you get 12 volts at the end of the wire? You need to do this when it does not start.
