Motorcycle Repair: 400N superdream carbs.tickover too fast, throttle cables, stop screw

Question
QUESTION: Just put engine and carbs together....Throttle stop screw is off the cam and not holding them open..... neither is the cables. Tickover is at 2500+ and wont come down. Do i need to adjust the pilot screws in the bottom of each carb  They are both about 2 and 1/2 turns out.

ANSWER: Well, the superdreams weren't sold in the US but those are pretty much the same as the CM400s of that era.  The throttle cables control the butterflies in the carbs.  The air flowing through the carbs lifts the slides so they don't come all the way down to the bottom of the carbs.

Something is holding the butterflies open or there's an air leak on the engine side of the butterflies. You need to check the throttle cables and bellcrank to see what's holding the butterflies open or look for the leak point.

QUESTION: Thanks for that...i have since removed the carbs..the small lever that opens the butterflies when choked was stuck firm and not turning on the shaft and also the slow the jets with the four tiny holes in were very dirty. Its come down now but i would still ike advice regarding setting the two pilot screws to geta nice even tickover as its still a little lumpy    Thanks for your help   Bob

Answer
Bob, I'd start at 2 1/2 -3 turns out and then adjust from there.  You turn the screws in until the engine speed starts to slow down and them out until it starts to slow down again and then put the screws in the middle of those two positions.
