Motorcycle Repair: 85 VT1100 Shadow lighting problem, lighting problem, vt700

Question
Hi Rich! I recently acquired this bike which I am fixing up for my son. The headlight and turn signals work, but all of the other lights (running, brake, license, illumination) are out. The brake warning indicator light is always ON. I have a Clymer manual and the wiring diagram shows a "brake warning unit" and all of the non-functioning lights seem to be tied to it. I called several shops and no one seems to know anything about this. I traced the wires back and found a 7-pin connector, located BEHIND the battery, which is tied to this "unit". There are no voltages present with or without the bike running. The problem is that I have no clue what this "unit" is that these wires are going to, which is UNDER the battery, and how to deal with it. I'm hoping that you can shed some "light" on this!

Answer
Charlie, sorry it's take this long to get to your question.  My experience is on older pre-82 Hondas but my wife has a 85 VT700 and I have a manual I was hoping could shed some light on your problem. The manual is for the VT700 but I'm hoping they are similar enough to help.  I think the box you are describing is the open circuit indicator unit.  Like you said there's 7 wires going to it.  From the circuit diagram, it looks like the blue/brown wire should provide power to that unit. So it should be hot coming in.

Rich
