Motorcycle Repair: Harley Signal Canceler Module (TSM), hd signals, google search

Question
Hello..

a few months ago i ran across this site and your replies while i was having trouble with the turn signals on my personal 1996 FLST clone..a google search led me to your attempts to help another reader who was having similar trouble with the same device on an XL of roughly the same vintage..trouble was non-functional or functional on one side only signals, believed to be caused by the signal canceler..we both had had non working signals an we'd both replaced the canceler as probable cause and gotten only one side of the signals to work for the effort..

after mucho testing, thinking, experimenting and banging my head on the wall, i happened to start the bike immediately after having tried the non working signals, which promptly came on...i have never felt so ambivalent in my life!!

that (insert favorite curses here) black box is sensitive to low voltage..

my problem started immediately after replacing a battery that failed from having the main switch turned on or a week straight...even though the battery had just come off a MF style charger it still wasn't enough to make the TSM happy on it's own..

rule of thumb: if your 90 or newer HD signals don't work with the engine off, start it up and try again..

Answer
Its notthe fact that you have low voltage at the turn signal modual, its that the light bulbs are not drawing enough current to make it work. If the voltage is low, then you have low voltage at the bulbs and it wont flash or work
Good luck and happy riding
