Question
Motorcycle Repair: HONDA vlx 600 LACKS POWER, honda vlx 600, valve heads
2007 Honda VLX Deluxe
Jim, I have a 2007 Honda VLX 600 Shadow with the single carb, I know that you prefer pre 2000 models, but this one is basicaly the e=same since 1988 except for the move to a single carb. My problem is my shadow does not make the kind of power that a 600cc v-twin should make, my top speed is 85 MPH, it was 75 before I drilled out the baffles and moved the air intake snorkel to breath in cold air instead of draw it's air from between the v's behind the carb. I KNOW that this engine, 3 valve heads, 2 spark plugs per cyl. 583cc, Liquid cooled, should produse enough power to reach 100MPH with a 140LB rider in 50 deg. weather. What would you recomend OTHER than porting and polishing the heads and lowering the cylender deck height for more compresion or even a big bore kit? I really love the way this bike rides and looks as I have already put over 12000 miles on it since I bought it new May 1ST 2008!!
ANY power increases would be wonderful

Answer
Without knowing too much about this bike I would suggest you try giving it a good factory tune up. Does it have solid lifters or tappets which might need adjustment? Has the carb been cleaned recently? What's the condition of the battery?

Also check if the brakes are dragging.
