Motorcycle Repair: 84 Honda Shadow VT 700c, motorcycle knowledge, upholstery work

Question
I bought a 84 Honda VT700c Shadow 2yrs ago. And it has sat for 2yrs. I have recently deceived to fix it, but I know absolutely nothing about bikes.

Overall, the bike body is in fairly good condition.  No signs of wreckage or abuse.  It has suffered from neglect.

I tried to start it with a car battery, because it does not have a battery at this time.

Q. 1) It will turn over but does not fire, or start. Any suggestions on what to look for or try?

I replace a connector for the RECTIFIER, REGULATOR
unfortunate I did not pay attention on how the wire went.

Q.2) On the RECTIFIER, REGULATOR there are 3 yellow wires going out, connecting to 3 yellow wires coming in from somewhere in the engine, how do these wires connect? They are all yellow wires. Which wire goes with which?

I would like to hear it start up, before I invest too much money on it. I have already order new tires for it, looked into a paint job, and upholstery work.

I truly believe it will be a nice bike someday, but with my lack of motorcycle knowledge could it be too much for me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Albert

Answer
You can connect any of the yellow wires together.  The "won't start" problem is either fuel or spark.  You'll have to figure out which.  If you pull the spark plug and lay them up against the head as you crank the engine, you can see the spark. If the plugs spark, you have a fuel problem.  You'll have to pull the carbs and clean them making sure to get the jets and passages clean.

I'd recommend you get a manual if you plan to try cleaning the carbs by yourself.
